What is Functional NutritionFunctional nutrition is a holistic approach to wellness that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of health concerns, rather than just treating the symptoms. Dietitians certified in Integrative and Functional Nutrition are trained to provide personalized, one-on-one support to help clients optimize their health through nutrition.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?A registered dietitian (RD) and a nutritionist may seem interchangeable, but there are important distinctions between the two: Registered Dietitians undergo extensive education and training, typically earning a bachelor’s or master's degree in nutrition or a related field, completing a supervised internship, and passing a national exam. They are regulated by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and often hold advanced degrees. Nutritionists, on the other hand, may have a range of educational backgrounds, from a bachelor’s degree in nutrition to certifications from various programs. The requirements for becoming a nutritionist vary widely depending on the country, state, or organization. In summary, while both RDs and nutritionists have expertise in nutrition, RDs have a more regulated and medically focused scope of practice, whereas nutritionists often specialize in health and wellness promotion. It's essential to consider your specific health needs and goals when seeking guidance from either professional.

Are you able to order lab work?Yes, dietitians can recommend and arrange for labs to be ordered to support a personalized nutrition plan and help with root cause analysis. These labs can provide valuable insights into your health and guide our approach to nutrition and lifestyle changes. However, it's important to note that dietitians are not able to diagnose medical conditions. Depending on your lab results, you may be referred back to your primary care physician (PCP) for further treatment and guidance. While functional labs can be arranged on an individual basis when necessary, our focus at Nourished Roots Functional Nutrition is to first address diet and lifestyle changes before diving into more advanced testing. This helps us build a strong foundation for your overall health.

How much should I expect to pay for lab work and/or supplements? The cost of lab work and supplements can vary depending on your specific needs. For blood work, you can expect to pay $75-150 depending on specific lab markers recommended by your practitioner. You do have the option to request labs from your primary care physician to see if they will be covered by your insurance if you prefer. For functional lab testing, prices typically range from $200 to $400, depending on the type and scope of the tests. Tests are ordered through Rupa health. Rupa does not accept insurance, but you may be able to use your HSA/FSA. As for supplements, the cost can also vary based on your individual needs as well as the brand and type of product. At Nourished Roots, we aim to recommend only the most essential and effective supplements, while prioritizing diet and lifestyle adjustments first. We only recommend high quality, third party tested supplements through Fullscript online supplement dispensary. We’re happy to work with you to find the most cost-effective options that fit your budget while supporting your health goals.
